ViCAFE is a Swiss specialty coffee brand, founded in 2010 by Christian Forrer and Kurt Lambert. We roast all our coffee locally in Zurich and serve it in our espresso bars in Zurich, Basel, and Eglisau – as well as for homes and offices throughout Switzerland. Our mission is simple: to offer you an exceptional coffee experience – rooted in sustainability and ethical trade. As a certified B Corp®, we are committed to the highest standards of quality, sustainability, and transparency.

FROM VIVI KOLA TO ViCAFE

Our story begins in Eglisau, home of Vivi Kola – the original Swiss Cola, bottled here from 1938 to 1986. In 2010, Christian and Kurt revived Vivi Kola and, in parallel, founded a specialty coffee company focused on high-quality beans, ethical sourcing, and excellent roasting. From the start, we not only roasted in small batches to supply regional businesses with freshly roasted coffee, but we also served our guests espresso-based beverages in our Eglisau coffee shop. Due to rapidly growing demand, we soon moved into the old Eglisau railway station building and invested in a larger roasting machine.

ESPRESSO BARS IN ZURICH, BASEL AND EGLISAU

In 2014, Christian and Kurt, together with colleagues Benedikt Hess, Silvio Mattanza, and Ramon Schalch as Managing Director, opened ViCAFE’s first espresso bar at Goldbrunnenplatz in the city of Zurich. While our first café and roastery had already been established in Eglisau, this marked the launch of a new concept for urban areas: the «window concept» espresso bar, focused mainly on take-away specialty coffee. As of September 2025, we operate 18 espresso bars in Zurich, Basel, and Eglisau – making a significant contribution to shaping Swiss coffee culture.

Today, you will find our home base in the SBB Werkstatt Areal in Zurich – a vibrant, innovative meeting place that unites our modern roastery, our bakery, a flagship coffee shop, our academy, and our office under one roof. A place where you can truly experience our brand.

We believe sustainability means creating positive change at every step:

  • ViFOUNDATION – For every kilogram of coffee sold, we donate CHF 0.50 to support farming communities through the independent ViFOUNDATION. The foundation drives projects in composting, reforestation, financial inclusion, and farmer training to strengthen long-term resilience.
  • Gutsch Oat Drink – Together with partners, we co-founded Gutsch, a Swiss organic oat drink cooperative created by baristas, for baristas. Made entirely with Swiss-grown oats and organic ingredients, Gutsch is designed to pair perfectly with espresso and offers a sustainable, plant-based alternative.

ViCAFE was founded in 2010 in Eglisau by Christian Forrer, whose vision and passion for specialty coffee laid the foundation for the brand. Together with co-founder Kurt Lambert, he built ViCAFE into one of Switzerland’s leading coffee companies.

Our roastery in Zurich is led by two qualified Q Graders, professional coffee tasters certified by the Coffee Quality Institute. They evaluate and grade coffee to international standards, ensuring that every bean we roast delivers exceptional flavor and quality.

ViCAFE’s commitment to sustainability extends well beyond ethical coffee sourcing. We donate CHF 0.50 from every kilogram of coffee sold to the ViFOUNDATION, an independent Swiss foundation dedicated to improving living conditions in coffee farming communities. The Foundation supports transformative agroecological projects such as composting facilities, financial inclusion programs, digital farming tools, and afforestation initiatives. Operating autonomously under Swiss law, it prioritizes community resilience and shared economic growth, including farmers not directly tied to ViCAFE’s supply chain.

In addition, ViCAFE co-founded Gutsch, a Swiss organic oat drink cooperative created «by baristas, for baristas.» This plant-based milk alternative is made entirely with locally sourced organic ingredients (including Swiss-grown oats, sunflower oil, red algae, and water), designed to foam effortlessly with coffee and harmonize with espresso – aligning perfectly with our sustainability and quality values.

ViCAFE sources coffee through direct, long-term relationships with farmers and cooperatives, led by two highly experienced sourcing experts within our company. A key example is our 10+ year partnership with Finca Los Nogales in Colombia, where we source unique microlots and develop coffee varieties grown specially for ViCAFE. Through the ViFOUNDATION, we further support Finca Los Nogales with projects such as composting and organic farming, ensuring quality coffee and a stronger future for farmers.
